If you’re just getting into Naruto or going back for a rewatch, you’ve probably heard about the infamous filler episodes. These are the parts of the anime that don’t follow the original manga — they were mainly added to give the manga time to move ahead. Some filler episodes are actually pretty fun, but let’s be honest — a lot of them feel like unnecessary detours. And if you’re planning to binge-watch the series, they can really slow things down.

Naruto has over 700 episodes in total, spread across two main parts:

  • The original Naruto series (2002–2007)
  • And the follow-up, Naruto Shippuden (2007–2017)

Here’s the thing: more than 40% of the episodes are fillers. That’s a huge chunk of content that doesn’t really push the story forward.

So if you want to skip the fluff and focus on the main storyline, this Naruto filler list will be your best friend. It breaks down exactly which episodes you can skip — no second-guessing, no wasted time, just straight-up ninja action.

How Many Episodes Are in Naruto?

The original Naruto series has 220 episodes packed into 9 seasons. Out of those, 89 are fillers — that’s about 41% of the entire show. So yeah, nearly half of it doesn’t follow the original manga storyline. That leaves you with 131 canon episodes, the real meat of the story.

Now, if you’re watching Naruto for the first time (or even rewatching), here’s the deal: skip the fillers. Seriously. You’ll save yourself around 1,780 minutes, or roughly 30 hours. That’s time better spent getting deeper into the main plot — or jumping straight into Naruto Shippuden, which has a similar filler situation too.

Unless you’re super curious or a completionist, skipping the non-canon stuff is the way to go.

Where to Watch Naruto

Looking to rewatch Naruto or dive in for the first time? You’ve got a few good options. Netflix is a popular pick — it’s got all the original episodes, and you can choose between English dubbed audio or subtitles. It’s available in places like the US, Canada, and India.

If Netflix isn’t an option where you are, try Prime Video — it also streams Naruto in the US, UK, Canada, and India. For those who prefer watching anime with subtitles only, Crunchyroll is a solid go-to, and if you don’t mind watching with a few ads, platforms like Pluto TV, Tubi, Roku Channel, and Peacock let you stream Naruto in the US without paying a cent.

  • Netflix: Offers all episodes dubbed and subtitled in the US, Canada, and India.
  • Prime Video: Available in the US, Canada, India, and UK.
  • Crunchyroll: Available in the US, Canada, and UK.

Naruto Filler Episodes To Skip

Once you’ve picked where to watch Naruto, the next step is simple — follow our episode guide. We’ve clearly marked each episode as either FillerCanon, or Mixed, so you know exactly what you’re getting into. For those “Mixed” episodes, we’ve even included timestamps to show you which parts to watch and which to skip. It’s all about helping you enjoy the story without wasting time on filler. To make things easier, we’ve also added color codes for quick reference.

FILLER – Marked in red. These episodes were not adapted from the manga and can be skipped without missing important story content.

🔵 MIXED – Marked in blue. Only part of these episodes comes from the manga, so we’ll list the specific minutes worth watching.

CANON – Marked in Black. These are fully adapted from the manga and must be watched to follow the story.

✅ Skip Recommendations: Episodes 136 to 220 are all filler. You can safely skip them unless you want extra fun stories.

What Naruto Fillers Worth Watching?

Even though most Naruto filler episodes don’t tie into the main plot, a few of them are actually pretty fun to watch. If you’re curious, here are some filler arcs that fans often enjoy and are worth giving a shot:

🪲 Episodes 148–151

Bikōchū Search Mission
Team 8 and Naruto set out to find the legendary bikōchū beetle, a creature that can track scents, offering hope of locating Sasuke.

👻 Episodes 162–167

Cursed Warrior Extermination Mission
Naruto teams up with Neji and Tenten to investigate the chilling mystery of the Cursed Warrior in the Land of Birds, after encountering a young boy named Chishima.

🌊 Episodes 169–173

Kaima Capture Mission
Led by Anko Mitarashi, Naruto, Shino, and Ino dive into a deep-sea mystery involving a strange creature terrorizing the Land of the Sea.

🔮 Episodes 203–207

Yakumo Kurama Rescue Mission
Naruto uncovers the hidden truth behind Kurenai’s resignation as a Jounin tied to her former student Yakumo Kurama, who possesses dangerous genjutsu abilities.

How Many Episodes and Seasons Does Naruto Have?

I still remember waiting every week just to catch the next Naruto episode. Back then, it wasn’t just some anime I watched—it sort of became this routine I looked forward to. I mean, 220 episodes? That’s a lot. It ran from October 2002 until early 2007, and honestly, it felt like it was with me through a big part of my life.

Studio Pierrot did the animation, and Hayato Date directed it—names I didn’t care about at first, but after a while, you just remember them. Especially when you think about how the show made you feel. Naruto shouting “Believe it!” all the time… and those moments where Sasuke would just go quiet? That contrast really hit.

And yeah, let’s be real—the fillers dragged sometimes. But weirdly enough, even those have their own kind of charm now. Like, they’re part of the whole experience. I don’t think I’d skip them if I rewatched it today.

How Many Filler Episodes Are in Naruto?

As someone who’s gone back and rewatched Naruto more times than I’d like to admit (yes, even sat through the fillers 🙈), here’s how it all breaks down:

Out of the original Naruto series, there are 89 filler episodes, which makes up roughly 41% of the show—yeah, that’s almost half! The remaining 131 episodes are canon, and that includes 4 mixed episodes (those weird in-between ones that start with actual manga scenes but then slide into filler territory). So, if you’re trying to follow just the main story, you’ll want to keep an eye out for those mixed ones too.

  • Canon Episodes: 127
  • Mixed Episodes: 4
  • Filler Episodes: 89

Back when I was binge watching Naruto during summer breaks, skipping fillers felt like cheating, but I’ll be honest after the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, the amount of filler was a LOT. 😅 Still, some fillers were surprisingly fun (looking at you, “Bikōchū beetle” arc 🐞). That’s why this guide Naruto Filler List exists to help you enjoy the core story while skipping the fluff, unless you’re in the mood for some goofy side missions.

What Are the Filler Episodes in Naruto?

If you want to skip the unnecessary stuff and stick to the real story trust me, you’re not alone! As someone who went through all 220 episodes (yes, even the ramen eating contests 😅), I can tell you that Naruto has a LOT of filler.

Here’s the full list of filler episodes,  these were not adapted from the manga and can be skipped without missing any important plot points:

  • Episode 26
  • Episode 97
  • Episodes 102–106
  • Episodes 136–140
  • Episodes 143–219

Yeah, you read that right from episode 143 to 219, it’s almost all filler. That’s a long arc of anime original content (I survived it once wouldn’t recommend unless you’re in it for fun side adventures 😅).

What About Mixed Episodes?

Some episodes are a mix of canon + filler, meaning only certain scenes are adapted from the manga, while the rest is extra content. These are called mixed episodes, and they’re important, but you don’t have to watch them fully.

  • Episode 99
  • Episodes 141–142
  • Episode 220

🧠 My tip? Use a trusted filler guide (like this one) that marks exact timestamps for mixed episodes so you only watch what actually matters. Saves time, keeps the story flowing.

Most fillers aren’t essential to the story. Some like “Kakashi’s Mask” or “Power Arc” are fan-favorites.

Out of 720 total (220 + 500), nearly 295+ episodes are fillers.

You can, but you’ll miss character build-up. It’s better to watch Naruto Ep 1–135 first.

In the original Naruto (2002–2007), episodes 136 to 220 are considered filler. These episodes contain non-canon storylines that were not part of the original manga.

Across both Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, there are over 295 filler episodes.

  • Naruto: 91 fillers
  • Shippuden: 205 fillers

That’s around 40% of the total series.

Yes, you can safely skip most fillers. The main story and character development happen in canon episodes. Filler arcs are usually side missions or flashbacks.

Some filler arcs are fun or beautifully animated. Recommended fillers include:

  • Episodes 349–361 – Kakashi Anbu Arc
  • Episode 101 – Kakashi’s Mask
  • Episodes 290–295 – Power Arc

Naruto Shippuden has a lot of filler, especially in the middle portion of the series. However, key arcs like the Pain Invasion, Fourth Great Ninja War, and Final Battle are all canon.

Here’s a quick Naruto watch order:

  • Watch key canon arcs only
  • Naruto Ep 1–135 (Canon)
  • Skip Ep 136–220
  • Shippuden Ep 1–56, then follow a filler-free guide

Filler episodes are used to:

  • Keep the anime from catching up to the manga
  • Maintain a weekly episode release schedule
  • Provide extra content during production gaps

No, filler episodes are not canon. They do not appear in the manga and were created by the animation studio. Some fillers loosely fit the storyline but are not considered part of the official Naruto timeline.

The Power Arc (Ep 290–295) is a highly rated filler arc with excellent animation, original story, and intense battles. It’s often recommended even for those skipping most fillers.

Yes, the Boruto anime also has a high filler percentage. Like Naruto, it includes many anime-original episodes that don’t follow the manga.

Pro Tip: Episodes labeled as “Anime-original” or “Filler Arc” are usually non-canon.

Technically yes, but not recommended. You’ll miss out on:

  • Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry origin
  • Key character relationships
  • Important backstories

Watch at least Naruto Ep 1–135 for a complete experience.
